Razel-Bec to rehabilitate Kariba Dam Zambia and Zimbabwe have awarded the rehabilitation of the Kariba Dam to Razel-Bec of France. In 2014, stories began to circulate that Kariba Dam was in need of urgent repairs, or it could collapse. The resulting panic brought the donors to the table, and in September 2014, it was announced that funding would be provided by the European Union ($100 million unspecified), the World Bank ($75 million unspecified), the African Development Bank ($36 million grant + $39 million loan) and Sweden ($20 million unspecified), with the balance of the $294 million repairs to be paid by the two countries through their jointly owned Zambezi River Authority. However, then the whole thing came to a standstill, allegedly buried in bureaucratic arguments, but now Razel-Bec is expected to mobilise on site within a month.
Works include reshaping and stabilising the 80+ metre deep plunge pool and refurbishing the six floodgates, but it was unclear whether Razel-Bec has been awarded it all, or only the plunge pool work. Either way, the rehabilitation will only be completed by around 2025. The Kariba Dam was built in the 1950s. Razel-Bec is the civil works division of the Fayat Group of France. It has built several dams in France, Algeria and Cameroon.
