Sustainable food systems are imperative to feeding the global population, and these systems are of particular importance among the poor. In Zambia, fish is of particular importance in diets to meet the needs for essential micro nutrients, essential fatty acids and animal protein. A recent study has shown that fish intake is associated with a lower level of stunting in urban poor children in Lusaka. We wish to increase fish production in rural Zambia through poly culture in order to increase household incomes as well as improve nutrition.

The objective of this internship is to work with communities and partners in Northern Province, Zambia to pilot and scale fish poly culture technologies in ponds to increase fish supply and intake, especially in women and young children. This internship builds on work already initiated in Northern Province by WorldFish, in partnership with local and national government institutions and non-government organizations.

Scope of Work

    • Expand pond poly culture to households in Northern Province, building on the trials which have already been initiated in farmers’ ponds.
    • Refine the poly culture approaches, taking into consideration inclusion of appropriate small fish species.
    • Work together with partners to include behavior change communication for increasing consumption of fish and fish products, especially among women and children in the first 1000 days of life.
    • Work with local partners to include fish production and consumption within a nutrition-sensitive food systems approach in Northern Province, Zambia.
    • Collect data on pond polyculture performance as well as fish consumption and dietary diversity.
    • Report on field activities and contribute to report writing.
    • Disseminate findings of the activities to relevant local and national stakeholders in order to influence the importance of increasing fish supply and consumption for improved food and nutrition security in Zambia.

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

    • Bachelor of Science or Master’s Degree in Nutrition, Agriculture, or related field.
    • Basic understanding about agriculture production; good understanding about the role of fish and other nutritious foods for human nutrition.
    • Experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis and interpretation.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work well with communities and partners in Northern Province, Zambia.

Location and Duration

This position is open to international applicants. This position will be based in Northern Province, Zambia. The successful candidate should be available to commence the internship as soon as possible for a period of one (1) year.
