  • Lead the evaluation and interpretation of individual discovery prospects and targets. Responsibilities include;
    • Drill rig supervision
    • Aircore and drill core logging and sampling

    • Management of small fly camps
  • Assist with the development and continual improvement of the Zambian geoscientific dataset to enable innovative and successful district and project evaluation

Formal Qualification:

  • Good knowledge of exploration tools, techniques and methods, including the application of geophysical techniques, diamond drilling and geochemical sampling.
  • Good knowledge of GIS analysis, database compilation and 3D geological modelling (ArcGIS, GeoSoft, Leapfrog)
  • Strong experience in greenfields exploration

Role specific experience:

  • A minimum of two years exploration experience
  • A minimum of one years working in Africa

Safety:

  • Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and the important role of consistently demonstrating required behaviours and championing safety values
  • Provides a consistent outstanding role model in relation to safety practices with a deep understanding of the importance of safety

  • In collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, lead the development of a portfolio of prospects and targets to be evaluated and tested.

Lubambe Copper Mine Jobs in Zambia : Hydrogeologist

Lubambe Copper Mine is located within the Greater Konkola Area of the Zambian Copperbelt and consists of a large – scale mining license covering an area of approximately 240 square kilometres. The mine is a modern, world class facility with fully mechanized underground operations.

Lubambe Copper Mines is owned by EMR Capital of Australia (80%) and ZCCM – Investments Holdings (20%).

The Mine is currently in a ramp up stage and will ultimately produce 45, 000 tonnes of contained copper and will employ approximately 1,500 people. The Plant infrastructure consists of a Concentrator plant, a laboratory and underground infrastructure. The Concentrator incorporates crushing, milling, flotation and filtration. The design capacity is 2.5 MTPA of ore at an average mill grade of 2.3% copper, yielding 45,000 tonnes of contained copper in concentrate to be sold to smelter in Zambia.

To support this vision, Lubambe Copper Mine seeks to employ experienced and qualified individual for the following position in the Technical Services Department:

HYDROGEOLOGIST – 1 POSITION

This position reports to the Senior Mine Geologist.

Purpose of the Position:

To carry out Geological functions such as planning and managing dewatering at Lubambe Copper Mine. The objective of the dewatering is to provide and maintain dewatered resources for planned production.

Key Performance Areas / Indicators (KPA/Is):

  • Eliminate FACs, MTCs, LTIs & Fatalities by promoting highest safety standards within and beyond the scope of geology requirements within the Lubambe SHEQ guidelines and mine safety statutory obligations
  • The Management of Ground water shall require the interaction of the Geology functions with, Engineering, Planning, Mining and Survey disciplines.
  • Responsible for planning of Dewatering holes, manage and supervise the drilling and installation of pumps to allow for Dewatering of the Mine ahead of Development and Stoping.
  • Ensuring that there is a Hydrological model of the Mine Model of the water and also ensure that all new sources of ground water are logged with their position, locations, pressure, rate and quantities of inflow.
  • Report all water intersections in terms of position, borehole number, depth of intersection and volumes intersected, monthly and ensure that such data is entered into the Database.
  • Develop detailed mine design/stoping layouts which ensure best utilization of the mineral resource based on survey and geological data. Optimize mine design/stoping layouts to incorporate updated methodology, reduce development requirements and increase mining productivity. Monitoring and controlling efficiencies and powder factors on primary and secondary development as well as stope production.
  • Manage the quality of all the drilling core, booked meterage, recovery and sign shift reports for each respective driller. He/she will ensure that the established procedure for Drill core handling is followed and that all the necessary data is captured and entered in the data base.
  • Responsible for drill core sampled to standard as per established procedure of sampling and ensure that the samples are submitted to the Metallurgical Plant Lab for assaying.
  • He / She will ensure a report is issued at the end of each month listing the holes drilled, final depth, water intersections and updates to the hydrogeology model.
  • Compile all drill shift reports and generate a cost forecast which will be forwarded to the Cost Accountant for Provision of payments and budget control.
  • Compiling the Geology Monthly Report for all the dewatering activities in the department.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Degree in Geology obtained from a recognised institution.
  • Advanced qualification in Hydrogeology will be an added advantage
  • Member of Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) is a must.
  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • A knowledge of CAD software particularly Datamine and Microstation.
  • Knowledge of 3D Hydrogeological/ mine planning software
  • 6 Years’ experience.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Working with minimum supervision.
  • Should be of a sober character.

  • Stope closure reconciliation report utilizing the resource model and or grade control model.
  • Effective communication with the analytical lab on sample processing and result release.
  • Conduct pre-stope mapping and provide mapped geological data to the Resource Geologist
  • Generate and validate and issue slot design wireframes to planning.
  • Inspect and confirm slot drilling compliance to designed slot wireframes and geological dips.
  • Attend daily production meeting to address all issues on grades and ore drive status.
  • Generate planned ore drive advance grades for monthly planning and forecast.

Qualifications and Experience

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Ensure compliance to all relevant safety and environmental practices in all underground and surface mining operations, maintain and achieve zero accidents.

 

2. Provision of Hydrogeological services which will includes assessment of dewatered resources, designing and modifying dewatering plans for the mine and formulation of water emergency procedures.

3. Manage and supervise the activities of the Hydrogeology section and supervise the dewatering drilling  programs ,designing execution interpretation of hydraulic test programme ,conducting hydro geochemical investigations and be able to interpret  results.

4. Be able to capture and store the existing hydrogeological data from the cards and reports into the digital database.

 

5. Install dewatering bores according to the plan and availability of the drilling sites prepared by operations and ensure all the hydrogeological operations are within approved budget.

6. Conducting flow measurements in channels and canals and be able to enforce QA/QC procedures.

7. Should be able to cary out geophysical investigations using various methods, both surface and downhole, and experience in supervision of such investgation programmes.

8.  Extensive field experience, on-site mining experience and hands on numerical modelling (basic level). Experience in managing and supervision of various contractors

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • BSc Degree in Hydrogeology. An MSc Degree will be an added advantage.
  • 5 years Experience in a similar job.
  • Expertise in mining hydrogeology, mine dewatering, groundwater control, groundwater supply and design of groundwater monitoring system.
  • Good interpersonal skills allowing successfull interaction with individuals from diverse background accross the mine.
  • Good skills in using MS Office Suite (WP, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and CAD. Knowledge of SURPAC (or Gems) will be an advantage.
  • Ability to create robust conceptual groundwater models and evaluate results of modelling results and understand their limitations.

Our SHE Superintendent should have:

  • A Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or Bachelor’s Degree of any Science or other relevant qualification
  • Industry Experience: At least Three (3) years’ work experience, preferably in the food industry and/or FMCG.
  • Trained in SHE functions, Preliminary Incident Investigation, ASHEP is an added advantage
  • Knowledge of aquaculture marine systems.
  • Must have an excellent track record with maintenance and continuous improvement of Safety, Health and Environment within a plant
  • Must have working knowledge and experience of OHS Act and Compensation for Occupational Injury and Disease Act, Environmental Legislation and other relevant Legislation
  • Knowledgeable about ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001
  • Analytical: Unpack data and make sense of it – must be very strong
  • Highly disciplined and meticulous
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to work a schedule outside business hours and/or flexible shifts.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be able to work in a team.
  • Be detail-oriented and meticulous.

  • Flexibility: Adapts to changing business needs, conditions and work responsibilities.
