NMSI is seeking a highly, meticulous, and hands-on construction health & safety supervisor with extensive experience in offering direction in relation to organisational health & safety management, managing health & safety legal and regulatory Compliance, and executing health & safety operational excellence. The Health & Safety supervisor will be responsible for the execution of NMSI Health & Safety strategy and will drive continuous improvement towards zero harm, implementing initiatives that foster a strong safety culture.

The Right-Fit candidate will report directly to the H&S Manager, with functional reporting to the Project Director and General Manager.

  • Carry out and participate in site risk assessments and consider how risks could be reduced
  • Outline safe operational procedures which identify and take into account all relevant hazards
  • Carry out regular site inspections to verify policies and procedures are being properly implemented and adhered to.
  • Ensure that working practices are safe and comply with legislation
  • Participate in, and lead training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks
  • Keep records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements
  • Ensure all HSE incidents and injuries are reported and recorded timely. Ensure that Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound (SMART) corrective actions are implemented, communicated and closed effectively.
  • Liaison with regulatory authorities and keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and any developments that affect the employer’s / contractors industry.
  • Produce H&S weekly reports,
  • Ensure equipment is installed safely and operated in accordance with manufacturers safe work instructions.
  • Monitor and provide advice for the storage and safe disposal of hazardous substances,
  • Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, heavy machinery operations, excavations, motor vehicle safety and occupational diseases etc
  • Facilitate HSE stand-downs, initiatives and project site H&S meetings as required.
  • Participate in pre-work start tool box talks, and pre-start risk assessments.
  • Assume responsibility for developing a strong culture of H&S within the business.

Our Health & Safety Manager should have:

  • Assume responsibility for developing a strong culture of H&S within the business.
  • General Certificate (IGC) in Occupational Health and Safety. International Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Membership with Zambia Occupational Health and Safety Association (ZOHSA)
  • At least 7 Years of experience in the H&S field
  • A Tertiary Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field, preferable
  • Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, preferable
  • Proven experience of at least 3 years in a Supervisory H&S role
  • Extensive experience conducting site inspections and H&S audits
  • Valid manual car drivers license, held for a minimum of four years

Competencies:

  • Valid manual car drivers license, held for a minimum of four years
  • In depth knowledge of H&S management systems, procedures, processes, and policies
  • Excellent working knowledge of all Zambian H&S legislation and regulations pertaining health, safety, and environment
  • Familiarity with international standards of best practice relating to H&S including but not limited IFC performance standards, World Bank EHS guidelines.
  • Familiarity with KPI’s, metrics, lagging/leading indicator
  • Familiarity with safety management systems including BS OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001 Health & Safety Supervisory experience in Construction environment is a strong advantage
  • HSE knowledge of safe working practices working on water, ports or jetties would be an advantage.

The successful candidate must be prepared to travel and work weekends if required.
