Purpose of the Role

  • To develop the Kalumbila Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS – approximately 10,000 Ha within the Kalumbila Minerals Mine lease site) into a functioning ecosystem that provides a genetic resource to restock surrounding wildlife facilities as well as building a wildlife asset base for KML.
  • To manage, monitor, maintain and protect the wildlife, water and fencing resources of the Kalumbila Wildlife Sanctuary, manage the existing Wildlife Monitoring staff and recruit and train future staff members
  • To manage the Kalumbila wildlife reintroduction and capture programmes
  • Working through TFL supported education programs, facilitate environmental awareness programmes for surrounding schools.
  • To develop a wildlife based community engagement strategy for communities surrounding KML including managing the fish livelihood programme on the Musangezhi and Chisola dam within the mine lease site.
  • To identify and develop ecotourism opportunities around the conservation areas including supporting similar initiatives for areas under the West Lunga project.
  • To initiate and run ecological and wildlife monitoring programmes and support wildlife based scientific research.
  • Develop and maintain operating procedures for all the areas of responsibility.
  • Provide oversight and guidance for the KML MoU with the Department of Forestry in Bushingwe and Lualaba National Forests.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on all issues associated with wildlife management as well as ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Facilitate structured planning, implementation, monitoring and continual improvement.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Management of the KML wildlife sanctuary
  • Coordinating the KML-FD Memorandum of Understanding for Lualaba and Bushingwe national Forest
  • Facilitate conservation awareness activities through mind-set transformation
  • Develop and implement program activities through structured planning, implementation, monitoring of KPIs and driving continual improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in conservation and natural resource management, wildlife management, veterinarian/agriculture or equivalent qualification.

Experience & Skills:

  • At least 5 years in a relevant field.

  • Self-motivated, innovative and able to develop wildlife based education, utilisation and management programmes
  • Ability to manage field teams
  • Understand government and corporate methodologies and operations as well as cultural practises of local communities in relation to natural resources
  • Be part of a team and able to solve problems in remote locations
  • Hard working and willing to work long and odd hours
  • Have a high level of personal and professional integrity
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent record keeping and report writing skills
  • Ability to develop and manage activities in a structured approach and through KPIs.

  • Understanding government requirements and ensuring sustainable stakeholder relationships with all key external stakeholders
