About Field Enumerator

The field enumerators will be primarily responsible for collecting field data. They will have direct contact with respondents and have a great bearing on the quality of data collected and ultimately on the quality of data output.

The duties and responsibilities of the field enumerator are as follows:

Pre-Enumeration duties:

  • Attend enumerators’ training workshop
  • Receive enumeration materials and equipment from the principal investigator
  • Develop an enumeration schedule/itinerary

Enumeration duties:

  • Locate (or select) sample members
  • Conduct interviews with respondents
  • Record responses as instructed
  • Comply with the requirements necessary for conducting a successful interview
  • Inquire about a variety of specific information including a person’s name, age, religious preference, address and community
  • Gather, record and encode information from a survey.
  • Get in touch with individuals to be interviewed in their own home or office by mail, phone, or in person.
  • Recognize and give an account of problems in obtaining data.
  • Submit completed tasks to a supervisor and discuss developments daily.
  • Review data gathered from an interview to check if they are complete and accurate.
  • Help people in filling out the questionnaires.
  • Find and record addresses and households.
  • Registration of qualifying beneficiaries into Commcare

Post-Enumeration duties:

  • Ensure that enumerator checking is complete
  • Ensure that all questionnaires and equipment are accounted for
  • Turn over all literature and materials used in the survey to the MEAL Team & Project Manager

Qualifications

  • Qualifications and experience
    • Minimum of Tertiary education at least at Certificate level or higher in social sciences/Clinical sciences/Environmental Health/ Nursing/Nutrition/ Education and related disciplines. A degree in any of the above-mentioned disciplines will be an added advantage.
    • Fluency in speaking a local language (Bemba & Nyanja) is a must.
    • Candidates should have experience/knowledge in data collection using mobile devices under platforms such as ODK, Kobo Collect, Survey 2 go, Iform bulder, CommCare etc. (a must).
    • Knowledge of beneficiary data base verification and management an added advantage.
    • Experience having participated in a survey.
    • Candidate should be physically and mentally strong.
    • Able to walk long distances and relate very well with the community.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a large research team
  • At least one year of related research experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills in verbal and written formats
  • A keen eye for detail and organization
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including both days and nights performing research or data entry
  • Desire to perform accurate and ethical research to achieve results for the study
  • Ability to negotiate and openness to learning new ways of performing research

Personal Skills

  • Good technical writing and presentation skills
  • Proactive, resourceful and results-oriented
  • Knowledge of local languages is an added advantage
  • Capacity to deal with people of diverse cultures
