Yalelo Zambia is looking for a Grow Out Manager to lead all aspects of the company’s tilapia grow-out operations, including production planning, harvesting, lake logistics, cage construction and moorings, fish health assurance, biomass attainment and ABW monitoring.

This role offers a unique opportunity to join a team preparing to deliver on ambitious growth targets, implementing best practices and operating standards.

This role is based at the production site – Lake Kariba, Siavonga.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing lake operations and grow out employees including hiring, training, scheduling, motivating and evaluating
  • Implementing FirstWave group-defined best operating practices and tailoring as necessary for local conditions
  • Feeding, monitoring, counting, sampling, and upholding fish welfare for best growth results
  • Cage construction, placement, moorings, net maintenance, lake logistics, fish transfers and harvesting operations
  • Development and management of health, safety and environmental protocols within the grow out department
  • Data entry, analysis and reporting.

Qualifications and Experience

  • BSc/Degree in related sciences field
  • 3+ years of work experience in the aquaculture sector
  • Strong written and spoken English
  • Driving license holder (manual transmission)
  • Scuba and boat license holder
  • Very comfortable on water and a strong swimmer

Technical skills and experience (desirable)

  • Management of outdoor large-scale tilapia fish farm
  • Management role within a farm that has produced more than 5,000 tons per year
  • Some engineering understanding/background/exposure

Management skills

  • Ability to establish and use KPIs and OKRs to measure and drive performance
  • Comfortable using Excel to perform data analysis
  • Comfortable using digital management information systems
  • Able to work collaboratively with other department managers to achieve shared goals
  • Can operate transparently and improve with feedback
  • Can continuously adapt and improve operations ahead of changing conditions, technologies and company growth

Additional personal qualities 

  • Must be able to regularly work weekends and anti-social hours
  • Experience in net making, rope splicing and cage mooring (desirable)
