Mission and objectives

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. Volunteerism is a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges, and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation.

Context

The UNV Field Unit office interacts with UN entities to strategically and meaningfully integrate vol-unteerism into the implementation and delivery of their mandates. As part of this process, UNV works with UN entities to identify opportunities where volunteers add specific and unique value to development program.

Task description

Under the direct supervision the Country Coordinator and in coordination with the ROWCA Communications team, the UNV Social Media assistant will undertake the following tasks: • In line with UNV corporate guidelines, generate, edit, publish and share daily content (original text, images, video) that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action to promote the UNV programme in its advocacy efforts. • Develop, implement and manage a regional social media strategy. • Ensure ROWCA social media accounts and communities receive a high level of support through effective moderation and strong community management. • Create and modify banners and graphic designs for global campaigns for usage on social media channels. • Take high quality photos and short videos during regional events or international days’ celebrations and edit them as necessary. • Arrange the webcast of events on the website and online interviews with senior mission officials on the Mission’s social media platforms and online forums. • Prepare comprehensive monthly reports to measure impact of social media presence, including detailed statistics and analytics on the ROWCA’s social media activity, audiences, reach, tweets, impressions, engagement and website traffic. • Keep abreast of latest developments in social media production, technological innovations and marketing techniques in the news and social media and web industries and ensure the successful integration of those tools in all platforms. • Undertake any other related duties as may be required. • Provide a scheduled publication plan, using social media management platforms like Hootsuite, Buffer or other. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Perform any other duties as required. • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute to articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible. Results/Expected Outputs: • Produce social stories for UNV social media channels • Produce social videos to celebrate international days and UNV’s flagship activities • Develop social media campaigns for International Days • Create innovative and new concepts of communication in social media • Take good quality photos • Film and edit videos • Produce social media content • Support Field Units with their social media channels • Prepare analytics’ reports • The development of capacity through coaching, mentoring and formal on-the-job training, when working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-) governmental counter-parts, including Implementing Partners (IPs); • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and docu-mented in all activities throughout the assignment

Requirements

Required experience

3 years of experience in social media highly desired. Excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, CANVA, video content creation with Inshot or any other system/tool to support graphic design and video creation. Team player. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and orally. Excellent organizational skills. Knowledge of UN agencies and civil society organizations in Senegal and/or West and Central Africa is highly desirable. Solid computer skills, including basic website management. Proficiency in word-processing software, spreadsheets, and work management software. Excellent command of Excel and other database software

Living conditions and remarks

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan.
