Senior Metallurgist – Technical

Lumwana Mine, Solwezi, Zambia

Reporting to: Metallurgical Superintendent

Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the Northwestern region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km southwest of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Senior Metallurgist – Technical.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Metallurgical Superintendent , your duties will include but not limited to the following;

Responsibilities

Apply metallurgical systems to achieve planned plant utilization and recovery targets.
Collect and analyze information to assess performance statistics, statutory requirements, systems efficiencies and business improvement initiatives. Recommend systems improvements.
Assist the Metallurgical Superintendent with implementation of change management initiatives and other business improvement projects.
Monitor plant performance against key performance indicators for variances and trends.
Monitor all stages of the metallurgical process to allow adjustments to process controls to enhance plant performance.
Monitor the content and discharge of process tailings to comply with environmental management obligations.
Ensure accurate metallurgical accounting procedures and review metallurgical reporting.
Work with the Process Training Specialist to develop metallurgical training and assessment modules for Process Operators.
Ensure that supplies of reagents and consumables remain at planned inventory levels.
Manage Contractors in the performance of agreed works and ensure Contractor meets all contractual terms including safety, health and environment responsibilities relating to their employees.
Assist the Metallurgy Superintendent in developing and improving metallurgical systems to ensure optimal plant utilization and recoveries.
Ensure the regular review of metallurgical processes and investigate, assess and where appropriate, try new methods or technology.
Develop and monitor targets for improvement in plant utilization and product recoveries.
Provide input for area of responsibility, during preparation of annual departmental budget. Review expenditure on a monthly basis and ensure all variances to budget are investigated and explained .

Experience & Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical, Mineral Processing or Chemical Engineering.
Grade 12 School certificate
Member of EIZ and registered with ERB.
A minimum of 5 years’ operating experience as a metallurgist or process engineer with exposure to froth flotation and tailings operations.
Significant minerals processing experience, with a minimum of 1 year experience as a senior metallurgist.
Knowledge of copper extraction and recovery technology and equipment.
Demonstrated ability to lead a team safely and improve team safety awareness.
Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas.
Experience with the use of PI historian an added advantage.
