Laboratory Technologist Zambart

Zambart is a research-focused non-governmental organization that conducts research on HIV and Tuberculosis to help control and mitigate the impact of the dual epidemic. Zambart staff form an interdisciplinary team with a range of expertise including epidemiology, clinical science, social science, laboratory, operations research, health systems and services research, health policy analysis, health economics, health communication research compliance and counselling.

To support our wide range of research activities, we have exciting job opportunities for the following positions in the Laboratory:

Laboratory Technologist (01)

Position summary: The role of the Laboratory Technologist is to provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively. This allows Research Laboratory Scientists to concentrate on, and perform, the more complex analytical processes in the laboratory. The Laboratory Technologist position aims to both extend personal academic development post-graduation and to build laboratory science research and capacity within Zambart and Zambia.

Reports to: Laboratory Manager

Location: Lusaka, Zambia

Responsibilities:

  • Receive all study samples, store and log into registration database
  • Enter Data of test results and other related specimen information
  • Perform Xpert testing for TB and a variety of other Xpert assays on samples
  • Prepare slides for and perform Fluorescent and ZN microscopy
  • Perform DNA/ RNA extractions in preparation for molecular/ PCR testing
  • Process blood samples for testing and biobanking
  • Prepare and/ or reconstitute lab reagents as needed
  • Monitor Temperature of laboratory freezers, refrigerators and incubators
  • Monitor and maintain Laboratory Equipment
  • Receive and store reagents and supplies
  • Responsible for inventory of lab reagents and supplies and circulating inventory report routinely to lab management.
  • Provide support to senior lab staff
  • Be a team player
  • Any other duties or responsibilities deemed necessary by the organization to assist in the implementation of ZAMBART projects and activities

Essential requirements

  • Diploma in Biomedical Science or recognised equivalent
  • Knowledge and adherence to stipulated biosafety measures
  • Full knowledge of MSDS
  • Be willing to work flexible hours which may include late hours or weekends when required to do so
  • Laboratory safety training
  • Experience in laboratory data capturing
  • Competent in Microsoft office – word, excel access, power point
  • Good people skills
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of Zambia
  • Experience in blood processing procedures, and TB knowledge
  • Laboratory safety training
  • GCLP and/ or GCP training
