Healthy Learners is continuing to expand in Zambia and we are seeking to recruit the services of qualified and dedicated professional to fill the position of  Media and Communications Officer  to be  based in Lusaka . This role will report to the Vice President – Development and Communications.
PURPOSE
The successful candidate will work closely with the Healthy Learners teams to achieve Healthy Learners advocacy outcomes with the support of the Vice President – Development and Communications. The purpose of this position is to provide support to the Healthy Learner Strategic Partnerships and Development in implementing its Communication and Visibility plans. The position is responsible for Media engagements; ensuring appropriate advocacy messages for diverse  decision makers; and generating evidence for School Health Programme Advocacy.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Contribute immensely towards media, digital and communication as part of advocacy development for the School Health  Programme.
Lead on media and communication as part of advocacy and together with the relevant programme staff identifies advocacy and communication issues related to School Health Programme at district, Provincial and National level.
Design and produce materials on media and communication for school health and its growth in use by different relevant audiences.
Develops work plans, individual development plans, and regular reports to the Vice President – Development and Communications.
Support programme partners in media and communications-related capacity building and ensure that this is integrated within the program.
Support the Programme in identifying potential new strategic media partners/ Champions for HL and developing strategies for working with them.
Have responsibility for the monitoring and supervision of media as part of advocacy-related activities and plans by ensuring that these are in line with HL Communications and Advocacy strategies.
Document and publish HL learnings by contributing articles, briefing notes, media publications and case studies for Advocacy campaigns and activities.
 Support HL staff and partners in getting relevant messages across to target audiences within and outside the organization on major activities.
Maintain contact with key civil servants, ministries and parliamentarians (Health, Education, etc) for information and feed these into HL national media and advocacy work.
Frequently update our HL social media outlets (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, etc.) and ensure we disseminate information about School Health on a regular basis.
Develop and sustain relationships with the media to feed into HL advocacy work.
Ensure adequate media coverage for all programme activities, functions and press releases/press statements.
Liaise with active allies to identify and help them to use rare opportunities to drive HL advocacy issues in various media outlets.

KEY QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 A minimum of bachelor’s degree in social science, Communication Studies, Development Studies or any other related field.
Minimum five (5) years work experience with at least three (3) years spent in a similar role is essential.
Minimum of three (3) years demonstrable skills and experience in direct and indirect lobbying/ advocacy and communications  work in this field highly desirable.
Demonstrable broad grasp and understanding of policy issues and policy in the Health and Education sectors.
Demonstrable skills and experience in effective media relations.
A demonstrable understanding of NGO media/advocacy work in the context of development.
Experience in capacity building and/or training skills is highly advantageous.
 Demonstrable and proven strong conceptual, research, analytical and writing skills.
Experience of working with Civil Society/ Media Network partners.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

Ability to communicate complex ideas in simple language
 Demonstrable ability to work independently, think strategically as well as work within a team
Creative thinking, developing, designing, or creating new ideas, relationships, systems, or products.
High level interpersonal and diplomatic skills
Fluency in written and spoken English and other Zambian languages.
Familiar with latest trends, tactics and technologies in digital influence and can link online with offline media.
Some graphic design skills and ability to develop simple infographics is desirable.
Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences and gender issues, and commitment to equal opportunities.
Ability to demonstrate an openness and willingness to learn for all aspects of development work.
Excellent time management and organisational skills with the ability to multitask, and meet strict deadlines.
