Communications Specialist

DESCRIPTION

Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Project Manager, the Communications Specialist will be based in Lusaka to develop and operationalize the Communications Strategy and activities under the Aquaculture Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Training for Improved Private Sector and Smallholder Skills project.The Communications Specialist will work closely with the Project Manager, Aquaculture Scientist to implement the Strategy within the two components of the project:

  • Upgrading the fisheries/aquaculture curriculum (long- and short-term courses), training tools, online training platforms, and internship programs of NRDC; and
  • Enhancing the technical education, vocational, and entrepreneurship skills of rural women, men, and youth smallholder commercial fish farmers and increasing their linkages to input/output markets and entrepreneurship opportunities via private sector extension support and services delivery.

Other key stakeholders the Communications Specialist will work with closely are partner BluePlanet to help develop the online training platform and training tools and the International and National Consultants who will develop and finalize the upgraded NRDC curriculum and internship program and training tools and the best management practices manuals and tools for smallholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the Communications Strategy with all project stakeholders and ensure its alignment with the WorldFish and FISH CRP Strategies.
  • Develop Communications guidelines and tools for the project, in line with the WorldFish and FISH CRP guidelines and tools.
  • Integrate gender and youth perspectives in all communications processes and outputs.
  • Help develop the online training platform and training tools with BluePlanet for piloting at NRDC.
  • Assist NRDC develop their business and marketing plans to attract more students, especially women and youth.
  • Help develop appropriate guides and manuals with technical experts (Consultants) and partner Musika and the private sector for training rural farmers in aquaculture.
  • Each month develop blogs, briefs, success stories, etc. for communication on project and WorldFish and partner websites. These will be identified with management and could also include posters, flyers, public service announcements, policy documents, working papers, project reports, etc. aimed at different target audiences (e.g. donors, policy makers, farmers, women and youth, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the M&E&L Coordinator when developing and reporting on Theory of Change and reflection and learning events and to highlight key areas of project success and key outputs.
  • Develop, maintain and update media relations contact list/database together with the M&E&L Coordinator. Coordinate media relations. Identify, develop, distribute and evaluate variety of media materials in multiple and appropriate formats.
  • Develop, maintain and update partners and other stakeholders contact list/database.
  • Devise ways to enhance visibility of WorldFish amongst various kinds of public stakeholders in accordance with its positioning, including in print and electronic media.
  • Develop occasional strategic communication products together with the Communications Division in HQ as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

This position is open to Zambian Nationals with the following skills and qualifications:

  • A university degree in Mass communication, Development studies, Social work or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years’ experience with an international organization.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to effective working relations in a multicultural team environment;
  • Excellent English writing, facilitation and communication skills
  • Self-starter and strong interpersonal skills

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position with annual salary ranging between ZMW161, 000 – ZMW181, 642 per annum. WorldFish’s NRS shall receive comprehensive benefits including (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, and pension / provident fund contribution.

Our Offer

This position will be based at WorldFish’s country office in Lusaka, Zambia. Interviews are expected to be held in September 2018. Only shortlisted candidate will be notified and expected to attend the interview. The successful candidate should be available to commence as soon as possible for an initial 3 years fixed term contract, with the possibility of contract renewal depending on performance and funding availability.
