Purpose Of the Role

At LASS, The Physiotherapy technologist will support the development of the school physiotherapy department and coordinator in implementing evidence-based preventative, rehabilitative and wellness programs for learners. Work involves evaluating learners to determine the need for physical therapy; develop appropriate therapy programs, including routines for classroom and home adaptation; and providing therapy to students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assesses learners using appropriate evaluation tools including standardized tests, clinical observations, and review of medical and educational reports to determine need for therapy intervention plan.
  • Develops and implements individualized therapy programs for qualifying learners.
  • Documents screenings, evaluations, Individual Education Plans, progress reports, classroom/home programs and other data, as required.
  • Provides consultation with classroom teachers and other school staff regarding learner’s optional/optimal function in the school environment.
  • Provides classroom programs, instruction in management techniques, adapted equipment, and environmental modifications including the identification of architectural barriers.
  • Consults with parents and/or guardians regarding learners’ therapy programs.
  • Adapts, fabricates and maintains specialized equipment required for therapy services or learner needs.
  • Investigates and recommends types of equipment available to meet learner needs.
  • Provides in-service training to teachers and other school personnel, as needed, assists with education, orientation and preparation of receiving school staff and learners regarding issues, concerns and information about “inclusion” of exceptional children in regular school and classroom programs.
  • Provides clinical education for physiotherapy student interns from colleges and universities.
  • Plans, orders and maintains departmental supplies and equipment; maintains records as required.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills required

  • Must have a Diploma in Physiotherapy or country equivalent.
  • Experience in CBR will be an added advantage
  • Must be registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) and have a valid license to practice.
  • Strong Communication. Interpersonal & Influential Skill
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Fluency in Chi Nyanja will be an added advantage
  • Must be registered with the Zambia Society of Physiotherapy
  • 3 years’ experience in physiotherapy with special needs children
