CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Scaw Ltd is the largest foundry infrastructure in Zambia. Scaw Limited was established in 1960 and has a work force of 500 plus direct employees plus 200 indirect employees. The Company is a supplier and provides solutions to the Mining and mining related Industry. Our main products are Grinding Media, Iron and steel Castings. Other products are industrial gases such as Oxygen and Acetylene.

We are seeking to recruit a Chief Operating Officer whose Job Particulars are shown below.

 

JOB PURPOSE

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is the Corporate Executive who oversees on-going business operations within the company. As second in-command in the Company, the COO reports to the CEO, focusing on the following goals:

  • Safety and Statutory Compliance
  • Production Capacity Enhancement
  • Sales & Marketing Strategy and Branding
  • Investment and Development of Strategic Partners
  • Organisation Change Management & Culture Transformation

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES/TASKS

1. Provides organizational change leadership to integrate and align people, processes, culture, and strategy.

2. Fosters continuous improvement and develops adaptive strategies that anticipate, influence, and respond effectively to organizational needs.

3. Manages costs and identifies new revenue streams through diversification, and development and maintenance of a modernization program commensurate with the company’s business plans. Monitors and reports the company’s monthly and quarterly performance against agreed key performance indicators.

4. Updates recruitment and retention measures in order to maintain stable skills and base to improve productivity of the workforce as well as to meet the future goals and demands of SCAW Ltd and its clients.

5. Provides oversight and guidance over skills development of employees to maintain a robust succession plan.

6. Develops options to automate and/or outsource labour intensive activities.

7. Ensures that SCAW Ltd adheres to full compliance with all health and safety regulatory authorities, as well as environmental legislation in line with Scaw Ltd operations.

8. Communicates successes and shortcomings to the Board of Directors as well as ensuring clear and consistent communication is provided to stakeholders at various levels within the company.

9. Engages with SCAW Ltd strategic partners – who are both clients and suppliers – to ensure uninterrupted supply of goods and services at the best-negotiated prices and appropriate quality befitting the parties’ operational requirements.

10. Engages with the unions at SCAW Ltd and negotiates constructively to settle Collective Bargaining Agreements.

11. Identifies and assesses global and local risk factors and advises the senior management team on steps to mitigate the identified risks.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DECISION MAKING

  • Reporting the performance status of the Company to the CEO
  • Delegating assignments to the executive team and managers with authority to make decisions;
  • Monitoring delegated tasks; Coach and develop managers;
  • Education: When need arises, attends advanced seminars and retreats with senior managers;
  • Cost-Conscious: To ensure the company operates within the approved budget Confidentiality:
  • To secure all company documents and information. In consultation with the Executive Team and departmental heads as well as relevant regulatory authorities: Approves major decisions;
  • Approves major orders from clients; Approves policy changes; Monitors performance in all Key Performance Indicators; Some decisions are made independently and then; the CEO is informed.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Education: Full Grade 12 Certificate Qualification: Engineering Degree or equivalent and MBA preferred.
  • Training Requirement: Advanced management and leadership retreats and technical seminars to keep abreast with current trends.
  • Skills/Abilities: Ability to understand, interpret and apply industry processes and quality standards related to project and program management.
  • Ability to read situations quickly, find common ground, gain cooperation, and settle disputes equitably. Ability to oversee, influence and successfully govern initiatives, change events, and operational projects based on risk and complexity.
  • Ability to collaborate, influence and lead all stakeholders to a common understanding while managing risks.
  • Ability to organize and motivate people and activities to create efficient, effective, and sustainable processes and workflows to achieve synergy Financial and business skills; Strategic planning skills; Analytical and critical thinking skills; Communication and presentation skills.

SKILLS / WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum experience: 10 years plus, in metallurgical or any manufacturing operations.
  • Awareness in preparing regulatory responses and participating in regulatory visits by inspectors.
  • Experience working across different disciplines with the ability to execute on ideas both independently and within a team structure.
  • Computer knowledge: Experience of computer applications related to business analysis. Personal attributes and other requirements:
  • Approachable and self-motivated.
  • Ability to multitask;
  • Business acumen: Understanding legal basics Strong work ethic, interpersonal, organisational, and motivational skills Self-starter that must be comfortable dealing with ambiguity, interpreting complex business concepts, identifying, and mitigating risks.
  • Work Relationships Internally Collaborates with the Board, Executive Team, and Executive Committee with regard to the creation and implementation of strategic business plans.
  • Holds regular consultative meetings with union leaders to maintain cordial and mutual partnership regarding smooth and productive business operations.
  • Externally Visits major strategic partners (mining companies) to build and sustain strategic business relationship. Regular liaison with Regulatory Bodies for high level compliance.
