Assistant Programme Officer Media Institute Of Southern Africa – MISA Zambia

MISA Zambia is the Zambian chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa. It is an organization designed to promote media freedom as well as promote media rights and responsibilities, tolerance, freedom and pluralism.

Assistant Programme Officer – 2 Positions

Job Description

i. Undertake activities that will contribute towards a tolerant Zambian society where freedom of expression, freedom of the media and safety of journalists is guaranteed;

ii. Undertake advocacy activities that protect and promote digital rights and freedoms for the benefit of the public and the media;

iii. Undertake activities that contribute to enhanced freedom of expression and safety of media practitioners

iv. Undertake advocacy actions that will promote norms and practices that uphold media freedom and freedom of expression in Zambia;

v. Coordinate media based advocacy to promote media freedom, freedom of expression and digital rights;

vi. Carry out stakeholder engagement meetings to promote and protect media freedom and freedom of expression;

vii. Create, update and maintain a database of MISA Zambia members;

viii. Coordinate membership interaction activities including braais, sports activities, donations and visits to members’ welfare;

ix.          Undertake media freedom monitoring of online spaces and identify and compile issues which have an impact on media freedom, freedom of expression and digital rights;

x. Compile alerts on media freedom, freedom of expression and digital rights in Zambia;

xi. Prepare and submit all contractual and organisational reports; including project reports, National Governing Council Reports and activity reports;

xii. Prepare and update advocacy documents to be used in conducting campaigns that promote media freedom, freedom of expression and digital rights;

xiii. Coordinate membership recruitment activities;

xiv. Compile news articles/features based on ongoing MISA Zambia activities for use in the production and publication to the MISA Zambia website and MISA Zambia E-newsletter;

xv.  Update, constantly the MISA Zambia website with approved content arising from MISA Zambia activities, position papers, campaigns and advocacy messages;

xvi.  Update, constantly the MISA Zambia social media pages with MISA Zambia, position papers, campaign messages, advocacy messages and all ongoing activities;

xvii. Coordinate logistical support to workshops and trainings on behalf of MISA Zambia;

xviii. Coordinate the World Press Freedom Day activities;

xix. Coordinate the production and launch of the State of the Media reports;

xx.  Coordinate the media self-regulation advocacy activities

xxi.  Coordinate the Access to Information Coalition including the advocacy strategy and members activities;

xxii. Prepare policy submissions on media freedom and freedom of expression;

xxiii.  Coordinate MISA Zambia public relations activities by responding to press queries, arranging for media interviews, developing responses to trending media freedom and freedom of expression advocacy topics;

xxiv. Participate in programme reviews, development and management activities;

xxv. Manage activities and products that promote the MISA Zambia brand;

xxvi. Develop and maintain a data base of all media houses in Zambia for easy circulation of MISA Zambia media products;

xxvii. Regularly brief the Programmes Manager and National Director on significant changes in the projects, contractual requirements and budget changes before they are submitted to the donor.

xxviii. Regularly brief the Programmes Manager and National Director on significant changes in trends or policy related to media freedom, freedom of expression and access to information;

xxix. Perform any other duties assigned by the National Director or supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS

1.  University degree in mass communication / journalism

2.   At least 2 years working experience in a similar position

3.   Research and presentation skill with knowledge on Microsoft Offices

4.  Good organizational and reporting skills

5. Ability to work with minimal supervision

6. Good planning / time management skills and able to meet deadlines

7. Knowledge in digital communication

8. Work experience in NGOs is an added advantage

9. Must be a team player and innovative
