Play it Forward Zambia (PFZ) is seeking an individual to join our team of dedicated staff in Livingstone. The person will manage effective project delivery by working in partnership with donors and organisations to identify new opportunities, prepare proposals for submission and develop innovative ideas.

The Literacy Coordinator will be responsible for assisting with the design and implementation of all PFZ’s Readers are Leaders Literacy Project which promote efforts of meeting the organisation’s overall vision, mission and organisational goals, thereby impacting on the organisation’s collective responsibilities and results.

The Literacy Coordinator is a new position at PFZ created in an effort to fulfil our vision of providing the support necessary for our beneficiaries to read and write. The Literacy Coordinator will work with the Projects Officer-Education to coordinate an out-of-school literacy programme for pupils in pre, primary and secondary school. This is an ideal position for a candidate with a strong background in literacy and teaching methods and a desire to think innovatively on how to best serve our beneficiaries ‘academic needs. We engage over 1,500 young people every year in a wide range of programmes from health education & HIV testing to literacy, coding, mentoring and support towards higher education and employment. Our support on and off the pitch, ensures that young people emerge from our programmes with new skills to succeed in school, the workforce and in life.

Job Details

Location: Livingstone, Zambia Salary & Benefits: Volunteer monthly stipend

Contract: 1 year (extensions dependent on funding)

Type: Voluntary

Reports to: Projects Officer-Education

Essential skills and experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in/with government, schools, intergovernmental or NGOs. Expertise in the delivery of education programmes for OVCs will be an added advantage
  • An appropriate degree level qualification in a relevant discipline, such as Education, Community Development, Social Sciences, Social Work, NGO Management, Sport for Development or equivalent
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality literacy teaching methods that are culturally competent
  • Experience developing and delivering literacy curriculums for young people
  • Proven record of basic budget construction and management
  • Excellent English communication, ICT and interpersonal skills Main duties and responsibilities
  • Lead engaging learning activities related to reading and writing for 1st-12th graders in the out-of-school literacy programme
  • Identify and engage young people to participate in the programme
  • Establish Academic Support Teams (partnerships with families) to incorporate literacy in the household
  • Maintain partnerships with teachers to identify how PFZ and families can best support each student out of the classroom
  • Conduct baseline reading assessments using Functional Literacy Assessment Tool (FLAT)/(School-based Test About Reading (STAR)/ other assessment tools and evaluate students’ progress toward reading at grade level
  • Identify and participate in continuous professional development related to literacy programmes
  • Assist with general administrative duties including project reporting
