Position Title: Senior Mechanics

Reports to: Workshop Manager

Location: Kafue National Park

Type of contract: Fixed Contract

Background

African Parks is a non-profit conservation organization that takes on the complete responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks in partnership with governments and local communities. We currently manage 20 national parks and protected areas in 11 countries covering over 17 million hectares in: Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Job Purpose

The Senior Mechanic is a key supervisorial position, which takes a hands-on role in the maintenance and care of all vehicles, boats, plant and machinery. The role supports all departments within KNP by ensuring that vehicle fleet is managed to exceptional standard. The role includes, but is not limited to:

  • Workshop Facility Management: Maintenance of the workshop facility, all its equipment, tools and associated building and grounds to a high standard
  • Asset Management: Responsible for the repair and maintenance of all Heavy and Light duty vehicles, boats, aircraft, machinery, equipment and tools through an ongoing preventative management program
  • Workshop Administration: Supports the Workshop Manager with all documentation related to vehicles, boats, machinery, tools and equipment. This includes all licensing and registration documents, service/maintenance history, all logbooks and storeroom/tool check lists
  • Workshop Stores: Assists in the management and oversight of stock control including fuel, spares, lubricants, machinery, equipment and tools; assist in the procurement of stock and materials
  • Staff Management and Supervision: Day to day management of staff under his/her supervision, setting tasks and overseeing these, ensuring an excellent work standard.
  • Fulfilling the role of the Workshop Manager in his/her absence

Minimum requirements, capabilities, competencies and experience needed for the job

  • Demonstrable experience of at least 5 years of workshop management with experience in handling boat engines, motor bikes, tractors and both light and heavy-duty vehicles – a formal qualification in motor mechanics will be an added advantage
  • Exceptional knowledge of HDV and LDV vehicles, boats, workshop machinery and tools, and the maintenance thereof
  • Knowledge of heavy-duty vehicle maintenance and management is integral to the role
  • Good organisational skills and an ability to manage several tasks at one time
  • The ability to grasp new vehicle technologies quickly.
  • Able to work under pressure and can work towards strict deadlines
  • Mature and sober person with a disciplined character, willing to work long hours in a remote environment, with limited resources
  • Ability to problem solve, make do with what one has to solve often complicated problems
  • A good leader with great people management skills.
  • Fluent English, written and spoken language
  • Good computer skills
  • Good team player and experience in managing people
  • Ability to be organised, flexible, self-motivated and work effectively with minimum supervision.
  • Good health and physical condition.
  • Ability to work for long periods in very remote and physically demanding circumstances at unusual working hours.
